7.4 million residents and 32 boroughs over 1.579 square kilometres: London is so confusingly huge that it has taken me many years to even begin to find my way around this truly cosmopolitan city. The aim of this book is to assist the visitor to find the most attractive and interesting places and hotels quickly and reliably. I recommend hotels primarily when they provide the guest with some inkling of the history and individuality of London. It may well be that hotel chains such as the Mariott and the Hilton have cheaper rooms which are less dusty, but it is my view that the atmosphere and local colour of a hotel are much more relevant.
